If you’re reading this blog, you no doubt have already installed and learned to love Mozilla on your home computer. However, you may sometimes be forced to work on computers that, for whatever bizarre reason, don’t have Firefox installed, and that don’t offer you the ability to download it. Guess you’ll just have to make do with whatever’s there, right? Not if you’ve downloaded Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition. The application was developed by John T. Haller of PortableApps.com. MFPE, or Portable Firefox as it is generally referred to), can be stored on a CD-ROM, but is small enough to fit on a USB flash drive or another portable device. The most recent version, 3.6.13, released on December 9, 2010.Any computer running Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7, or a UNIX-based system running Wine, can use this release. Those running WinPE XP or BartPE XP will run into issues using the new version, but these operating systems are compatible with Version 2.0.0.20, which is still available for download.Don’t think that because Firefox Portable iswell, portableit means you’ll have to sacrifice usability. You’ll still be able to download extensions and automatic updates. These extensions, as well as any bookmarks and personal settings, can be saved onto the flash drive or other portable device. Plugins, on the other hand, cannot be “installed,” but they can be copied to folder if they are already present on the computer.Among the many unique features of Firefox Portable are a default profile designed for portability, a download prompt which lets users choose where to save downloads, and an update prompt which allows users to choose not to update (updating to the flash drive can slow down the computer).
